Quick Review of Bon Jovi Night
Bon Jovi night? Seriously? I knew Bon Jovi was going to be the mentor, but I thought that meant doing 80’s hair band music or something like that. Nothing but Bon Jovi songs? Ok.
Seriously, I wonder how these deals are worked out. What does Bon Jovi’s record label have to do to get him this pimp spot where he gets all his songs on the air (being payed appropriate royalties, of course) and then gets to have a gigantic television audience watching him perform some new song of his tonight? And if absolutely crappy and talentless hacks like Akon can do it, then you know it’s all about shady deals and cousin-of-a-producer kind of arrangements.
Anyway, the performances.
Phil — Pretty good, definitely better than average for him.
Jordin — Yikes. I don’t think I’d ever heard a bad performance from her until tonight, but this was it. Completely off pitch for most of the song, and just a mess. Bad song choice. Terrible song choice. She is so freaking lucky that the votes are combined with last week’s votes, so she should be sticking around. DialIdol has her in first place, and the only one guaranteed not to be in the bottom 3 according to them.
Chris — Not bad. Not great. If I had to choose the worst two of the night, it would be Jordin and Chris.
Lakisha — Very good. The song choice really made it for her.
Blake — I was really nervous when they mentioned that he was going to be taking a risk and beatboxing his way through the song. It wasn’t as amazing as Randy seemed to think it was, but it wasn’t terrible. The most interesting bit was when they showed the recap at the end of the show using his performance from rehearsal, where he did some much more interesting vocalizations than he did last night. I guess that’s the risk of being a genuine performer and not planning out every single aspect of every single second of your performance the way 99% of people do these days. And that’s a big reason why 99% of the music out there is complete crap, but that’s a rant for another day.
Melinda — Rock on. She can’t do badly no matter what. It was a little strange to see her put on this rock attitude for the performance and then be smiley happy Melinda afterwards, because it emphasizes that the performance was all about acting. But she did awesome, as usual.
DialIdol is predicting LaKisha and Chris going home. We’ll see. It’s a little unfair that last week’s show mattered so much more than this week’s show, though. With twice as many votes last week as usual, this week probably can’t compete, and so last week’s votes will mostly be the ones that matter. That’s bad news for Lakisha.
